A mudslide triggered by heavy rains has displaced at least 18 households in Lilongwe after part of Chilenje Mountain collapsed earlier this week.
Lilongwe District Disaster Management Officer, Anganile Kalonga, confirmed the incident on Thursday, explaining that the mountain gave way on Tuesday following persistent rainfall that has affected the area for over a week.
The disaster occurred in the area of Traditional Authority Mazengela, where saturated soils caused a sudden mudslide that swept through homes and farmland.
Affected families have been relocated to the Kalinda Community-Based Child Care Centre, where they are receiving temporary shelter as authorities coordinate relief efforts.
Officials from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) are expected to conduct a full assessment to determine the extent of the damage and mobilize additional support for the displaced households.
