Child rights advocate Memory Chisenga has called for increased attention to maternal mental health issues in the country.
Chisenga made the remarks following a disturbing incident in Mwanza, where a 21-year-old woman, Milika Luciano, allegedly burned the hands of her four-year-old child on suspicion that the child had stolen vegetables.
She said the incident highlights the growing problem of mental health challenges among mothers.
Chisenga has since urged the government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, to thoroughly assess the situation and develop effective interventions.
She further emphasized that perpetrators of such abuse must face appropriate legal action to deter similar acts and ensure the protection of children.
Meanwhile, Luciano is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
