Six people have been arrested in Zomba for illegally mining gold along the Likangala River without a licence.
According to Member of Parliament for Zomba City South East, Dr. James Mpunga, the arrests follow a joint effort involving traditional leaders, police, and councillors aimed at curbing the malpractice, which is contributing to environmental degradation.
Mpunga said findings indicate that many youths are engaging in illegal mining due to poverty.
He added that plans are underway to support the affected youths through a K100 million Youth Development Fund, introduced by President Peter Mutharika, to provide alternative livelihood opportunities.
He has since warned that anyone found engaging in illegal mining without proper authorization will face the full force of the law.
