Zomba plants 2.4 million trees

Zomba District Forestry Office says over 2.4 million tree seedlings have been planted across the district during the ongoing National Forestry Season, as part of efforts to restore the environment.

Assistant Forestry Officer, Yassin Lamusi, said despite this progress, over 5,000 already planted seedlings were damaged following heavy rains that recently hit the district.

He, however, expressed optimism that the district will meet its target of planting three million trees before the close of the season on April 15, 2026.

Lamusi was speaking in the area of Group Village Head Minama during a tree planting exercise organised by the Zomba Malosa Taskforce, with support from United Civil Servants SACCO.

In his remarks, Zomba Branch Manager for United Civil Servants SACCO, Francis Kathewera, said the initiative is part of the organisation’s broader vision to plant two million trees by the year 2028.

Chairperson for the Zomba Malosa Taskforce, Venerable Canon Dr. Eston Pembamoyo, commended United Civil Servants SACCO for supporting efforts aimed at restoring the Malosa Forest Reserve which is facing severe deforestation through charcoal production.
