Government has ordered all individuals and groups involved in illegal mining activities across the country to immediately cease operations or face strict legal action.
According to a media statement signed by Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Shadric Namalomba, the country is currently facing a serious national security and economic threat due to the rapid rise in illegal mining and the cross-border smuggling of unprocessed mineral resources.
Namalomba says the illegal activities are depriving the government of much-needed revenue while also contributing to environmental degradation and loss of valuable natural resources.
He has since warned that law enforcement agencies will intensify operations to track down and prosecute those involved, stressing that the government will not tolerate any actions that undermine the country’s economy and security.
The government has further urged communities to cooperate with authorities by reporting any suspected illegal mining activities in their areas.
