Eight inmates from five prisons across the country have been selected to pursue further studies at various higher learning institutions after passing their Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations.

Among the inmates, three are from Zomba Prison, two from Mzuzu Prison, while Mzimba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe prisons have each contributed one inmate.

According to Malawi Prison Service spokesperson, Steve Meke, the selected students have been admitted to institutions including Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mzuzu University, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences and University of Malawi.

When asked about the future of these inmates given that they are still serving their sentences, Meke said the Prison Service writes to the respective institutions to reserve places for them while also exploring possible options such as granting them pardons.
