ESCOM promises reduced loadshedding

By Peter Davieson

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says Malawians should expect noticeable improvements in power supply reliability in the coming months, including faster fault response times and reduced loadshedding.

In a statement released on April 20, 2026, ESCOM indicated that fault response times are expected to improve within 30 days and stabilize within 60 days.

The utility also projected a significant reduction in loadshedding within the next eight months.

According to ESCOM, the main challenge has been electricity demand outpacing supply, a situation that has led to frequent power outages across the country.

The corporation also acknowledged delays in responding to and restoring power during faults.

To address these challenges, ESCOM, in partnership with the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO), has begun balancing electricity supply and demand on a daily basis to maximize available generation capacity.

Additionally, ESCOM has launched a nationwide fault clearance campaign and deployed extra teams to the field to clear repair backlogs and improve service delivery.
