Alex Banda pledges better welfare, safety for journalists

Veteran journalist Alex Banda, who is contesting for the chairpersonship of MISA Malawi, says he will improve the welfare of media practitioners and ensure they operate in safer conditions if elected during the May 9, 2026 elections.

Speaking on Thursday while presenting his campaign manifesto to media practitioners based in Zomba, Banda said journalists in Malawi have for a long time faced poor salaries and difficult working conditions, a situation he said compromises professionalism and work ethics.

He said that once elected, he will work closely with organizations such as the Journalists Union of Malawi and media managers to lobby for improved benefits and better working conditions for journalists.

Banda also pledged to promote the safety of media practitioners, saying the mandate of MISA Malawi should go beyond issuing statements condemning attacks and abuses against journalists.

He said he plans to partner with relevant institutions, including the Internal Complaints Commission and the Malawi Law Society, to ensure journalists receive legal representation whenever they face conflicts with the law.

Banda further said if elected, his leadership will establish partnerships with training institutions such as the University of Malawi to improve training opportunities for journalists working in community radio stations.

He also pledged to ensure fair access to training opportunities organized by MISA Malawi for all members.
