A 41-year-old security guard Clement Lihuta has died after being attacked by German Shepherd dogs in Old Naisi Township in Zomba.
Deputy police spokesperson for Zomba, Andrew Mwale, said Lihuta was employed by Chalo Security Services and was guarding the residence of John Kauta, the owner of the dogs.
Mwale said on Monday night, the homeowner heard the guard shouting for help. When asked what was happening, the guard responded that the dogs were attacking him. The homeowner then advised him to seek safety inside the guard room.
The homeowner also attempted to contact the security company to send another guard suspecting that the guard might have been intoxicated, but the calls went unanswered.
Later, around 9 p.m., the homeowner again heard the guard screaming. Further attempts to contact the security company were unsuccessful.
The following morning, another security guard who arrived for duty found Lihuta’s body covered in blood, with two dogs near the scene.
Police took the body to the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that he died from injuries caused by the dog attack.
Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Lihuta hailed from Mc Moles Village under Senior Chief Mwambo in the district.
