Lilongwe City Council has ordered all phone kiosk operators conducting business in unapproved areas to remove their kiosks within seven days.
According to a notice dated May 18, 2026, signed by Chief Executive Officer Clement Stambuli, the council says the kiosks are causing obstruction to pedestrians, traffic congestion, sanitation challenges and negatively affecting the city’s appearance.
The council has warned that operators who fail to comply with the directive will have their kiosks removed without further notice, and owners will be required to cover the costs of the exercise.
The notice further advises operators to relocate to designated trading areas and obtain approval from the council before resuming business.
