Minister of Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, says government will take swift action to address challenges affecting traders at the newly opened Bypass Road Market in Lilongwe.
Phiri made the remarks on Tuesday during a tour of the market, where vendors raised concerns over limited trading space, high rental fees, and lack of electricity connections.
He assured the traders that his ministry will work closely with relevant authorities to resolve the problems and ensure smooth business operations at the facility.
About 1,200 vendors have already occupied spaces at the market after relocating from Wakawaka Market.
Chairperson for the new bypass market, Leonard Muchombo, said business is gradually taking shape at the market, although the available space is not enough to accommodate all traders.
