Counterfeit seed threatens Malawi’s food security

By Temwa Tembo

Counterfeit seed continues to threaten Malawi’s food security despite the introduction of Seed Scratch Technology.

A recent study shows fake and uncertified seed is still common in many rural markets, leaving farmers with poor harvests and financial losses.

Agriculture expert Leonard Chimwaza says many farmers in remote areas either do not know how to use the Seed Scratch verification system or lack access to mobile phones and network services.

He says more awareness campaigns, demonstrations, and extension services in local languages are needed to help farmers identify genuine seed.

Chimwaza has also called for tougher penalties against those involved in the counterfeit seed business to protect farmers and strengthen national food security.

Reports indicate some vendors are repackaging fake seed in bags branded with logos of legitimate seed companies, making it difficult for farmers to spot counterfeit products.
