Govt relocates reception centre for SA xenophobia returnees

The government has announced the closure of Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre as a reception centre for Malawians fleeing unrest in South Africa.

According to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) official, Charles Matabwa, returning nationals will now be received at Joyce Chitsulo Ground in Mwanza District.

Matabwa said the relocation is aimed at speeding up the process of assisting returnees to travel to their respective home areas while also reducing congestion at the reception centre.

Reports indicate that about 8,000 Malawians are still being accommodated at temporary shelters in Durban, South Africa, while approximately 3,000 have already returned to Malawi.
