Rehabilitation works on the K100 billion, 47-kilometre Liwonde–Matawale section of the M3 Road which connects Zomba and Machinga districts are set to begin on July 10, Minister of Transport Jappie Mhango has said.

The project is being financed through a combination of a grant and a loan from the World Bank under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP). Construction is expected to be completed by July 2027.

Mhango made the announcement on Friday during the official groundbreaking ceremony held at Malosa in Zomba District.

He assured the public that the government is committed to ensuring the road is rehabilitated to the highest construction standards to improve safety, connectivity, and economic activity along the route.

Roads Authority Board Chairperson Witness Kuwotcha said the contractor, Stecol Corporation, is expected to complete the project within two years, in line with the implementation schedule.

Member of Parliament for Zomba–Malosa Constituency Grace Kwelepeta welcomed the development, expressing confidence that the project will create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth for communities living along the road corridor.
