Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has called on Parliament to summon the heads of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), the Malawi Police Service (MPS), and the National Intelligence Service to answer allegations of negligence and incompetence over a reported security breach on Lake Malawi.

In a letter signed by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, the organization said Malawians have been alarmed by reports that a Tanzanian vessel allegedly sailed through Malawi’s territorial waters on Lake Malawi without being detected until it docked at Monkey Bay, near the MDF Marine Headquarters.

CDEDI said the incident has raised serious concerns about the country’s security preparedness, arguing that it is unacceptable for such an occurrence to happen despite the existence of fully funded marine units under both the MDF and the MPS, which are financed by taxpayers.
