Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has expressed disappointment with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)’s decision to postpone the parliamentary by-elections for Nsanje South and Mangochi East constituencies, which were scheduled for September 29, 2026.

In a statement signed by its chairperson, Benedicto Kondowe, CSEIF said residents in the two constituencies are being left without parliamentary representation.

Kondowe said the country’s laws allow government to ensure that MEC has access to its warehouses and that the electoral body does not face unnecessary obstacles in conducting elections.

Recently, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the Commission had postponed the by-elections because its electoral materials warehouse in Lilongwe remained sealed, affecting preparations for the polls.

Mwafulirwa said MEC was engaging relevant authorities to restore access to the facility before announcing a revised electoral calendar.
