Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) has condemned threats made against a 10-year-old boy with albinism in Biwi Township, Lilongwe, describing the incident as a serious violation of the child’s rights and security.
In a statement dated August 17, 2026, MACODA said a 21-year-old man, who is currently in police custody, was overheard by the victim and his peers allegedly making remarks that chopping off the boy’s arm would earn him millions of kwacha.
MACODA said the remarks reflect dangerous myths surrounding albinism and could fuel attacks and discrimination against people with albinism.
The council reminded the public that such conduct violates the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 4 of 2024, particularly provisions prohibiting inhumane and degrading treatment of persons with disabilities.
MACODA said it will monitor the judicial process following the suspect’s arrest and, in collaboration with the state’s legal team, provide technical and rights-based support to ensure that the court understands the intersection between disability rights and criminal law.
The council has also urged members of the public to report any threats, violence or other forms of abuse against people with albinism to the police and relevant authorities.
