Internal auditors urged to strengthen good governance

Internal audit professionals have been urged to play a critical role in promoting prudence and strengthening good governance in institutions to prevent the abuse and mismanagement of public resources in the country.

Sunbird Tourism Chief Executive Officer Samson Mwale made the call on Tuesday during the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) annual conference currently underway in Mangochi, where he is the guest of honour.

Mwale said effective governance is essential to improving organisational and national performance, as it helps identify and address weaknesses before they lead to the misuse of resources.

He expressed concern that cases of abuse and mismanagement of public resources often come to light only after malpractice has already occurred.

Mwale therefore urged internal auditors to take a proactive approach by ensuring that governance systems are functioning effectively and that potential weaknesses are addressed before they result in resource misuse.

Meanwhile, IIA President Msungeni Salanje concurred with Mwale, saying the institute has a vision of providing training and professional development to enable its members to promote good governance.

The annual conference is being held under the theme: “The Currency of Trust: Governance as Strategy, Assurance as Proof.”
