Sub-Saharan Africa Family Enrichment (SAFE), a Christ-centred non-governmental orgnisation (NGO), says it plans to construct a new K672 million complex in Zomba aimed at enhancing education and youth development.
Speaking during an open day ceremony at Likangala Park on Friday, SAFE Board Chairperson Mangani Chilala Katundu said the complex will include an education park for children, an amphitheatre, a modern library, a biological learning pond and sports fields.
“We wish to have a wonderful park, partly forested and a resource centre, in honour of the organisation’s founder, Professor Dick Day,” he said.
Katundu said the organisation has so far raised US$15,000 (about K25.7 million) towards the initiative and has called for partnerships with organisations and construction companies to help bring the project to fruition.
Zomba City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Anthony Gonani, said the council will support SAFE’s plans to modernise its Haven.
Gonani also commended SAFE for contributing significantly to the impressive performance of students in the city in national examinations.
Henry Sakala, a beneficiary, said free after-class lessons provided by SAFE helped him score 19 points in the recently released Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.
Sakala said he has also gained knowledge in business management and developed public speaking skills through the organisation.
SAFE provides children and young people with a safe space to interact, play and access edutainment and after-class care, while also offering psychosocial support to the elderly to improve their well-being and help them care for vulnerable children.
