CAMFED urges dropouts to return to school

The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) has encouraged children who dropped out of school to return and benefit from bursaries.

CAMFED Chikwawa District Operations Officer Takondwa Phiri made the call at Namalindi Primary School during a gathering aimed at publicising the Scholars’ Entrepreneurship Fund (SEF) project.

Phiri said the project seeks to improve school retention by encouraging children who dropped out of school after getting married or giving birth due to lack of support to return to school.

Namalindi Primary School headteacher Fraction Pemba said the school has, since the start of the project, registered five learners who had dropped out, adding that its doors remain open for more children to benefit from the CAMFED fund.

In his remarks, Senior Chief Mulilima cautioned parents and chiefs who perpetuate cultural norms that expose young children to sexual activity and early marriage.

He said by-laws will be enforced and offenders reported to the police where necessary.

The SEF project is being implemented in 40 primary schools and two Community Day Secondary Schools in Mfera and Phwazi areas of Chikwawa District.

The primary schools have received grants to purchase school materials for learners, while the secondary schools have received mattresses and boarding entitlements for students.
