Mutharika visits blood-sucking victims

President Peter Mutharika has assured Malawians that his government is going to deal with the ongoing blood-sucking allegations.

Mutharika was speaking at Mulanje Secondary School during discussions with communities who have been affected by the blood-sucking rumours.

Mutharika said his government will arrest and prosecute whoever is responsible for the allegations.

He appealed to the communities not to be scared by the allegations as security has been tightened up in all the affected areas.

“Next week we will start distributing coupons here in Mulanje so when you see vehicles coming here don’t be scared,” he said.

Mutharika announced that he will also hold similar discussions in Phalombe and Thyolo districts.

During the discussions some victims of the mob violence for suspecting them of being blood-suckers were given platform to narrate their side of the story.

One of the victims, Traditional Authority Mabuka, whose house was ransacked by angry mobs, denied knowledge on the allegations.

The discussions were also dominated by testimonies from people who alleged that the blood-suckers are linked to witchcraft.

During the discussions, the Lomwe Paramount Chief Ngongoliwa announced that chiefs in the affected districts will deal with the matter if indeed witchcraft is at play.

Seven people have been killed by mobs since the resurfacing of blood-sucking reports in the southern districts of Mulanje, Phalombe and Thyolo.
