Heavy rains destroy 90 houses in Rumphi

At least 90 houses and 17 shops have been destroyed by floods in Rumphi.

District Disaster Management Desk Officer for Rumphi, Alufeyo Mhango told YFM online that the affected number of houses may rise as assessment is still on going.

The heavy rains have affected areas such as Mzokoto, Phwezi and Phoka and other damaged property include a primary school and a hospital.

Meanwhile government through the District Council and Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has swiftly came in with relief items for those that have been affected.

This comes three weeks after the district experienced a hailstorm which rendered 34 households homeless after their houses were blown off.

YFM reporter in Mzuzu, Chimwemwe Mikwala reported in Saturday morning the floods blocked passage of cars and people were seen climbing trees for safety.
