High Court sustains injunction against Gandhi statue

The High Court in Blantyre has sustained an injunction to Mahatma Gandhi Statue-Must-go Movement, following the absence of defendants who are the Attorney General and Blantyre City Council at a court hearing on Monday.

Leader for the movement, Pemphero Mphande disclosed that justice Mike Tembo ruled that the injunction still stays until defendants show up for the court hearing at a later date.

Mphande said the ruling means that the construction works for the statue in Blantyre is still prohibited.
On October 31, the High Court in Blantyre granted an injunction to the movement stopping the erection of the statue.

The construction of the statue drew sharp criticism from Malawians who feel Malawian heroes are the ones who deserve such an honour.
