Multiple registrants will answer charges

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that those who registered more than once during the voter registration exercise will face the law.

The warning comes amid revelations that a total of 13,411 names of multiple registrants have been removed from the voter’s roll.

MEC Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah said the commission will soon report all multiple registrants to police.

“The law is very clear. Those that register more than once they have committed an offence,” Ansah said at a media briefing in Lilongwe.

Justice Ansah said the commission believes that the multiple registrants will be charged and tried within a short time.

The Malawi Electoral Commission is currently conducting voter verification exercise in preparations for the 2019 tripartite elections.
