Red Cross relieves 130 flood victims

At least 130 households affected by strong winds on December 23, 2018 in the area of sub T/A Ndanga in Mulanje district have received a portion of K4.6 million from the Malawi Red Cross Society.

George Mwimaniwa, disaster risk reduction project manager for Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) said the money has been distributed according to the magnitude of the disaster the highest amount being K52,000.

Mwimaniwa emphasized that the cash transfer is unconditional.

“By unconditional cash transfer we mean that the people can utilize the money however they want, they can either bank it, buy iron sheets or anything provided they use it profitably.”

Meanwhile one of the affected persons Rhoda Mtokosa thanked Malawi Red Cross Society for the timely donation.

“I was affected by the floods on that fateful Sunday and it is by Grace that my child and I survived, explained the 21 year old.”

“The money will assist me to buy food and other necessities and currently I am renting a house which costs me K4,000 per month.”
