Sanitation woes hit Lilongwe’s Biwi Primary School

Biwi Primary School in Lilongwe City is facing serious sanitation challenges which are affecting delivery of quality education at the school.

According to Head teacher, Lonely Kachitosi, over 900 leaners at the school share two pit latrines.

“We have two pit latrines against the population of 999 learners so you can just imagine. Over 400 boys use one toilet and girls use the other toilet so it’s so unhygienic,” she said.

Kachitosi said that most of the classrooms at the school are not conducive for learning.

“We have over 140 desks which are not functioning. The learners sit down yet we have these broken desks. The classrooms are also very dirty and needs to be painted,”she said.

Kachitosi disclosed this on the side-lines of the back to school initiative which Malawian dance-hall star Blasto, real name Otis Chilamba, organized at the school together with his friends and partners as one way of preparing the learners for the new term.

“We brought supplies for school kids like school books, pens, some laundry soap, some tooth brushes and toothpaste so that as they start they can have more like a starter pack,” he said.

Chilamba said learners were also provided with motivational talks in different areas to encourage them to stay in school.
