Youth challenged to be pioneers of change

Zomba City Council (ZCC) has commended youth from Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) and Bible Youth Advocate of Malawi for cleaning Zomba Market and surrounding areas as one way of promoting hygiene.

ZCC Environmental Health Officer, Gomezgani Nyasulu said the exercise was very commendable as it has helped the council to fulfill its mandate of keeping the city tidy.

“This is the responsibility of each and every citizen to maintain cleanliness of the area as it declines health hazards,”Nyasulu said.

He urged well-wishers in the city to take part in such activities.

In his remarks, YONECO’s Community Mobilization Coordinator Jacob Nyirongo said the initiative will improve the city’s hygiene and help in attracting more investors.

“If you train these young ones at this tender age as they grow they will be able to practice the same thing and become responsible citizens,”he added.

Nyirongo urged youths across the country to find time and visit YONECO drop-in centers and learn new skills on how they can grow and become responsible citizens.

On his part, Youth and Children Officer for Bible Society of Malawi Wongani Mhango said the activity is part of their corporate social responsibility.

“We believe that there is a mandate in scripture that says we need to take care of our environment, so as young people in Zomba we thought that we could show our social responsibility by cleaning the city,” said Mhango.

He then urged the youths to be pioneers and bring the change that we want to see in our communities even if it’s on volunteer basis.
