Presidential poll results await High Court ruling

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it will not proceed with the announcement of presidential election resultsĀ until the vacation of a stay order by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is made.

On Saturday MCP obtained an injunction from the High Court in Lilongwe restraining MEC from announcing the presidential results until a recount is done in 10 districts.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Dr Jane Ansah told journalists on Sunday at Comesa Hall in Blantyre that the commission might update the nation depending on the outcome of the court sitting.

“You are aware that there is a court injunction against the release of presidential results. Therefore, the Commission will not proceed to release anything until the court processes are completed,” she said.

Ansah also announced that the commission is tabulating results for local government election from 462 wards.

“At the moment, we are finalizing the verification and determination process while addressing all l8 complaints,” she said.
