Mzuzu police set for anti-Ansah demos

Police in Mzuzu say they are prepared to offer security during Tuesday’s mega demonstrations by Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC).

Some unconfirmed reports indicated that police officers from other districts have been deployed to work in Mzuzu city to beef up capacity.

But Northern Region Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya told YFM on Monday that this is a planning matter and not for public consumption.

Kalaya said he could not divulge much information only that police are ready to do its work during the demos.

Tuesday demonstrations will be the fifth anti-Jane Ansah demos and will be different from the previous four.

HRDC has targeted one million people during the demonstrations in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

Inspector General of Police Rodney Jose said recently that the police has no capability to manage the crowds during demonstrations.

In Mzuzu, the demonstrations usually get violent as people burn and destroy government and individuals property.
