Government commits to promoting girl-child education

Government says it is committed to promoting the rights and education of a girl-child in the country.

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Thom Navicha made the commitment during this year’s national commemoration event of the International Day of the Girl Child.

Navicha said although Malawi has registered progress in promoting girls, access to quality education is still a challenge in many areas.

She therefore vowed by among others, to ensure that more schools are built and accessible for girls.

Navicha also said her ministry will ensure that girls are economically empowered.

UN Women Representative, Clara Anyangwe, applauded government for the efforts in promoting quality education for the girl child.

However, Anyangwe said government still needs to prioritize and abide by the Convention on the Rights of Children (CRC).

One of the female students, Shakira M’bumpha said the event was an eye opener and a motivation to her.

The day is annually commemorated on October 11 to celebrate girls as they inspire, break boundaries and take charge of their own future.
