Mutharika under pressure to fire Botomani, Mhango

Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked President Peter Mutharika to immediately fire two cabinet ministers following coronavirus allowances scandal.

This follows a leaked video clip which is exposing a discussion by Minister of Health Jappie Mhango and Minister of Information Mark Botomani on how to hide figures of hefty allowances for coronavirus pandemic assignments.

Another leaked memo from the Ministry of Disaster Management Affairs also revealed that Cabinet ministers are getting hefty allowances for COVID-19 assignments despite earlier sentiments by Botomani that the allowances allegation were false.

In a statement, CDEDI interim executive director Sylvester Namiwa, said the leaked conversation is a clear indication that the coronavirus taskforce wanted to enrich themselves at the expense of Malawians.

Namiwa said the development vindicates Malawians who had reservations about the taskforce.

He said Botomani, who is also the government spokesperson, has tainted the image of government and therefore can continue to work in his capacity.

Namiwa has said should the president not act on the call within 48 hours necessary measures will be taken.
