Catholic Churches reopen amid spike in Covid-19 cases

Catholic Bishops under the banner, Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has directed the resumption of all church gatherings after they were suspended last month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“All church gatherings and communal liturgical cerebrations should resume forthwith in churches and small Christian communities,” ECM said in a statement.

ECM President Most Reverend Thomas Luke Msusa told YFM Online that the Church will continue observing COVID-19 preventive measures as set by government.

“The directives issued by the Health Ministry will take place that the church gatherings will use the 100 people and more than and also considering the issue of social distance,” he said.

The Church has also advised its congregants that wherever possible everyone should face masks when in attendance of a church gatherings and funeral functions.

Minister of Health Jappie Mhango announced on Monday that 13 more positive COVID-19 cases have been registered in the last 24 hours as of May 9 2020, raising the number of cases to 56.
