Deputy Minister of Lands Habida Mia has pleaded with councils across the country to ensure gender balance when processing citizen applications of land ownership.

The deputy Minister made the plea during her tour to the establishments under the Ministry of Lands in Zomba district especially at the office of the mayor and the physical planning offices.

“I was impressed with Rumphi District where a good number of women are land owners and it would be very pleasant if we can have this across the country to promote gender balance,” said Mia.

The deputy minister Mia also issued a stern warning against people taking bribes in order to accord land that government is going to investigate those cases and if found guilty the law will take its course

“The Government of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has no tolerance for corruption, we are saying no to corruption and if all can practice this, Malawi’s story can change,” said Mia.

Zomba City Mayor Benson Bulla agreed to make sure that women are given equal opportunities and has also called upon all women to express their interest in owning land and that they will be assisted accordingly.
