Mzuzu vendors defy ban

By Isabel Molande

It is business as usual in Mzuzu City as vendors defy the council’s directive to stop plying their trade in undesignated areas.

Last week, Mzuzu City Council issued a directive banning all business that is conducted in undesignated places from August 3, 2020.

However YFM’s visit in the city’s Central Business Districts and other places established that vendors are still operating in restricted areas.

Speaking to YFM, one of the vendors Andrew Chikuse said much as they appreciate the need to conduct business in closed markets, they are too many of them to fit in markets that are available in the city.

But Council spokesperson, MacDonald Gondwe maintained that the council has enough marked with space to accommodate all vendors.

“Mzuzu has over 10 markets in the city that can accommodate all the vendors in the city but they have decided to abandon the markets,” said Gondwe.

Meanwhile, the vendors have until close of business today to voluntarily move into the designated places.
