By Mabuchi Chunga

Malawi has become the first country in the world to produce sanitizers from a chemical called Citrodol commonly known as PMD.

The sanitizers are being produced by a company called Virisafe CPL in Kawandama Hills in Chikangawa where PMD is extracted from the Lemon Eucalyptus tree.

According to a statement from Virisafe, following a string of tests that were carried out in the United Kingdom the main ingredient in the sanitizer Citrodol (PMD) has been proven to be effective against the coronavirus.

“Malawi is the first country worldwide to make a PMD based sanitizer, “Kawandama Hills director Tania Clarke said in the statement.

The Malawian government through the Ministry of Health and Industry has shown interest in boosting productivity of the product and will maintain constant contact with Kawandama hills.

According to the statement, the government says through high quality local production it is confident that the advantages of the product will go a long way in protecting health workers and the public against Covid-19.
