Former Miss Malawi to receive UMP Fashion Icon Award

In an effort to recognize people who have contributed in promoting the fashion and arts industry in the country, UMP says this year`s fashion icon award will be awarded to former Miss Malawi Mabel Khonje.

In a statement, UMP Awards Executive Producer, Ken Zizwa said Mabel is the shining star of Malawi’s fashion game adding that her style is refreshing, bold.

On her part Mabel urged aspiring fashion designers and models to continue working hard.

“Just like any other person starting their own business, it’s never easy. But, I would advise aspiring fashion designers and models to work hard and never give up,” she said.

Mabel is the first black woman to own and launch a lingerie line in the Netherlands and also the first person to launch a lingerie line in Malawi.

Previous UMP Fashion Icon Awardees include Ben Wandawanda and Mary Chilima, wife to Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima.

UMP 2020 awards virtual ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 19 December.
