Odillo, 3 others cashgate trial adjourned to next month

The State has finished parading witnesses in a K2 billion cashgate case involving former Malawi Defense Force (MDF) Army Commander General Henry Odillo and three others.

Odilo, MDF Deputy Commander Clement Kafuwa, former Accountant General David Kandoje and Ganizani Kuchombo are being accused of fraudulently paying arms supplier Thuso Group about K2 billion for a contract despite not supplying the arms.

According to State prosecutor Kamudoni Nyasulu the State has completed parading all its 27 witnesses after parading the last witness who is Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) Chief Investigations Officer Florence Phiri.

“After this witness, the State will close its case, and we have paraded 27 witnesses,” said Nyasulu.

Meanwhile, the Defense is expected to start cross examining State Phiri when the matter will resume next month.

“We are expected to start cross examining the witness and possibly after the end of the cross examination we have indications from the State that they will be closing their case,” said Powell Nkhutabasa, one of the defense lawyers.

Hearing of the matter, which is heard before Judge Professor Redson Kapindu, has since been adjourned to 6 and 7 April this year.
