The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has advised Malawians to register their sim cards with their network providers.
Speaking to with YFM online the Director General of MACRA Godfrey Itaye said this is not a strange thing as it is part of the 2016 Regulations Act.
“It is a requirement for every country to have such rules so as Malawi we also have to do the same.”
Itaye said the process was started last year but has been put it into implementation now.
He disclosed that said this will also help to curb issues of stealing and tricking which have become serious in the country.
“For example some criminals tell people that they have won different items and end up requesting money in order to dupe them.”
Itaye said people should use their valid identity cards when going to register while stressing that all those sim cards that will not be registered will be banned from accessing network.
The sim cards registration process will be finalized on March 31, 2018.
