YONECO FM (YFM) says it will continue dedicating itself to promoting the rights of all Malawians as one way of meeting the demands of its audiences.
Chairperson for YONECO Board of Trustees Professor Dixie Maluwa Banda said this on Saturday at Gymkana ground in Zomba during the 3rd anniversary celebrations for the radio’s existence.
Professor Banda said YFM was established as an answer to young people’s demands.
“Twelve years ago when management presented a request from young people that they wanted to have a radio, we felt that yes, but we need to follow what is required for us to have a radio,” he said.
Banda added: “We started working on it with management and finally in 2012 MACRA awarded us a license that indeed you have what it takes to have a radio.”
Professor Banda described YFM as a very unique radio station which provides employment opportunities to young presenters, producers and reporters.
“A decision that we made was that we would like to involve young people in this radio and indeed when applications came, we were surprised that some old guys from other radio stations had applied but we said no this is for the young people,” he said.
The Board Chairperson said it is so encouraging that in its 3rd year of existence, the radio station has managed to change people’s lives and mindset.
“When we started rolling out it is very interesting that other people did not believe that we will ever succeed, that we will not even survive a year and they thought that this is quite a flop but we believed in our young people that they have what it takes to develop this radio station,” he said.
Maluwa said the radio station will continue to be the real voice of the youth, women and children in the country.
Spicing up the show were a number of renowned artists like Blaze, JJC, Lil Jimzy, Slice, Saxes and Jammy Marcus among others.
The event was also graced by the presence of Mr and Miss Zomba who engaged young people on youth development and rights.
The event also gave listeners an opportunity to interact face to face with their favorite YFM presenters, producers and reporters.
