Malawi pleased with TyVAC trial progress

TyVAC is typhoid vaccine trial which was launched on February 21 2018 at Ndirande Health Centre in the city of Blantyre.

Since then the trial has been rolled out to Zingwangwa health centre, schools in Ndirande and Zingwangwa catchment areas.

In an interview with YFM online,TyVAC Programme Manager Tereza Misili said, there has been an overwhelming response at their sites as mothers and guardians bring their children to be vaccinated.

TyVAC records show that about 3,461 children between 9 months and 12 years have been vaccinated.

Misili further said they are targeting about 24,000 children to get vaccinated by end August 2018.

She also revealed that there were no major challenges we faced this far apart from minor technical issues which were resolved instantly.

The programme manager appealed for participation from parents and guardians in the typhoid vaccine trial because it is safe and effective in preventing typhoid fever.

TyVAC has been tested in other countries and proved to be safe and efficacious.

The vaccine has also been prequalified by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
