Employee nabbed over illegal water disconnections

Two men have been arrested for allegedly disconnecting water meters without the authority of Northern Region Water Board, police said.

The two have been identified as MacNelious Mhone, a Sales Representative at Northern Region Water Board and Tony Banda, a resident of Chibanja Township in Mzuzu city.

Northern Region Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub inspector Maurice Chapola said the two were arrested after receiving a tip from well-wishers.

“It is alleged that the two were disconnecting water meters within Mzuzu city,” he said.

Chapola added that investigations have revealed that over 30 water meters are missing from the board’s stores.

He said the two men have been charged with two counts of theft and theft by public servant.

Mhone, 33, hails from David Jere village while Banda, 30, hails from Kadokolo village both from in Traditional Authority (TA) Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba district.
