Parliament set to follow Constitutional Court orders

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has assured Malawians that Parliament will carry out the Constitutional Court orders with speed.

Hara said following the judgement Parliament has made arrangements to come up with necessary reports and draft Bills for fresh presidential election.

She said Parliament is also liaising with the Office of the Solicitor General on the possibility of complementing each other in coming up with such bills to be passed by the House during the forthcoming 3rd Meeting of Parliament.

“Space has been provided for the Bills and committee reports to be considered and passed by the House before February 24, 2020 when the 21 days period ordered by the Constitutional Court comes to an end,” Hara said.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court gave Parliament 21 days period to take appropriate legislative measures on the 50+1 bill and issues surrounding the appointment of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson.

The court also ordered Parliament to ensure that whoever is elected President during the fresh elections, is allowed to serve the constitutionally prescribed five-year term.

Parliament was also ordered to make appropriate provisions for the holding of the Presidential run off in the event that no single candidate secures the constitutional majority.
