Bushiri to sell cheaper maize in Malawi

Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) founder Prophet Shepherd Bushiri says he will be selling maize in Malawi at a cheaper price of K5, 000 per 50 kilogram bag.

In his address to Malawians from his base in Sandton, South Africa on Tuesday, Major 1 said the 18,000 metric tons of maize stock will be sold from Wednesday.

He said the first markets will be opened in Ntcheu followed by Salima, Chikwawa, Karonga, Chitipa and Phalombe districts.

But Bushiri said they will make sure that the maize reaches all areas which are heavily affected by the hunger.

Major 1 said the move is part of helping Malawians who are facing hunger not politics.

“The point is that I want to show the nation that my focus is to help, not to do politics,” he said.

Prophet Bushiri said he has decided to take up the initiative alone following lack of urgency on the need to deal with the hunger situation in the country.

“Everybody was busy with courts yet our people are starving,” he said.

Currently, maize prices on the market in the country are ranging from K16,000 to K20,000.
