Taskforce proposes reopening of schools

The National Planning Taskforce on the Possible Re-opening of Schools, Colleges and Universities has recommended to the Presidential Taskforce on Coronavirus that all learning institutions be re-opened on July 13, 2020.

The Taskforce said in a statement signed by its Chairperson Professor Lewis Dzimbiri that it will announce specific details and conditions for the opening of the schools after finalizing consultations.

“Consultations to various stakeholders have already started in earnest with the first press release, and a Consultation Memorandum has been dispatched to various learning institutions and other sectors for their views on safe opening in their various contexts,” reads the statement in part.

The Taskforce said that it is working in a systematic and fact based way to ensure safe re-opening of schools, colleges and universities.

Almost six million school-going children have been home since 23 March due to the closure of schools as a preventive measure against the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of June 1 2020, Malawi had registered 336 confirmed Covid-19 cases, 42 recoveries and four deaths.
