Police asked to act swiftly on criminal acts

Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked the Malawi Police Service to swiftly investigate all criminal acts and violence that occurred before and on the polling day.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, MHRC Chairperson Reverend Patrick Semphere expressed concern over a number violent incidences during the process.

Semphere called upon all presidential candidates to preach peace to their supporters.

He also asked the police and the Malawi Defence Force to adhere to human rights principles when dealing with suspects of violence.

Semphere urged the media to act responsible and report fairly to avoid inciting violence.

He said that the remaining days in the electoral process are critical for the nation.

Semphere called upon the general public to avoid propagating false rumours that could plunge the nation into chaos

He also asked the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing complaints.
