UNIMA students demand swift action on sexual violence incidents

University of Malawi Student’s Union (UMSU) has asked authorities to swiftly act on perpetrators of sexual harassment in the universities.

This comes as various social media platforms were awash with a leaked WhatsApp conversation between polytechnic dean of students- Luciano Ndalama and a first year student where the dean was allegedly asking for sexual favors.

On the other hand, a first year student at the Chancellor College is believed to have been gang raped by eight male students.

Speaking to YFM- general secretary for the Union- Annie Fumbi said described this as unfortunate.

Fumbi said the incident has the potential of negatively affecting the students.

She added that it is more worrisome to note that perpetrators of this vice are school authorities who were supposed to protect the students.

Fumbi also urged her fellow students to ensure that they report such cases to put to an end the development which leaves girls vulnerable.

Meanwhile, the first year student who was allegedly gang raped is refusing to comment anything on the matter.
