A 61-year-old man has hanged himself to death in Dowa District over K3000 village bank saving loan.

Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Gladson M’bumpha identified the deceased as Lingson Maseko from Kachinga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa.

The incident happened at Kachinga Village where the deceased hanged himself in a tree on November 1 2020.

It is reported that the deceased had a debt amounting to K3000 belonging to village bank in his village which he was supposed to pay back on November 1 2020.

“On Saturday, the deceased was seen moving around the village to borrow money so that he could pay back the loan but no one assisted him until around 6 o’clock morning when he was found hanging himself in  a tree whilst dead,” M’bumpha said.

“The matter was reported to police, who visited the scene accompanied by medical personnel who confirmed death as due to suffocation secondary to hanging.”

Meanwhile, police in Dowa have advised the general public to avoid resorting to committing suicide whenever they have problems but rather report their problems to relevant authorities like police and traditional leaders for proper counseling and guidance.
