DPP permits women lawyers to prosecute Chikwawa defilement case

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mary Kachale has granted permission to the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) to prosecute the defilement case of an 11 year old girl in Nchalo, Chikwawa District.

The case which is currently in court will be prosecuted jointly by the WLA and lawyers from the state advocate’s chambers.

Commenting on the development, the President for WLA, Tadala Chimkwezule said they will do anything within their capacity to ensure that justice prevails on the case.

“We were interested in the prosecution of the case and we applied to the Director of Public Prosecutions to give us consent to be part of be prosecutors and we are grateful that we have been permitted.”

“As WLA we believe that justice will be served as we work together with the state advocate chambers on the case which is currently in court,” she added.

Chimkwezule further reiterated the association’s commitment towards protecting and promoting the rights of children.

The WLA will be represented by Counsel Bernadette Malunga, Counsel Ngcimizile Mweso, Counsel Felister Dossi and Counsel Immaculate Maluza.

Meanwhile, the girl is receiving psycho-socio support.
