Lilongwe vendors given go ahead to demonstrate

Lilongwe City Council has granted permission to small scale business operators to hold demonstrations in the city on Friday against economic injustice.

The business operators led by the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) are pressuring President Lazarus Chakwera to address concerns that foreigners are plying trade in different localities illegally.

On Monday the business operators and CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namina had a meeting with Homeland Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda but the meeting ended in deadlock.

Namiwa told YFM that they have planned to deliver their petition to President Lazarus Chakwera through Lilongwe City Council.

“We will start at 9 O’clock from Lilongwe Community Centre Ground passing Mchesi through Kamuzu Central Hospital roundabout, Parliament roundabout up to the Civic offices where we are going to present Lilongwe Chief Executive Officer who will take the same petition to President Lazarus Chakwera,” he said.

He said the grouping will not relent until their concerns are addressed.
