US government donates to WFP Malawi

The U.S. government through United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated about K7.7 billion to World Food Programme (WFP) to help achieve zero hunger goals and manage disasters in Malawi.

Head of partnerships at WFP Malawi, Badre Bahaji said the donation will help create heathier, natural environments and reducing risks to weather shocks in Malawi.

“This donation will provide emergency assistance to vulnerable households, support live hood of community members and strengthen the capacity of national and local institutions.

“It will also be used to provide cash to forty two thousand refugees at Dzaleka camp so they purchase local food whilst in the camp,” he said.

Bahaji added that such donations have been helping about four hundred thousand small holder farmers to improve their productivity, food security and resilience to weather shocks.

“These farmers have built and maintained assets to improve their livelihood like community gardens and small scale irrigation faming,” he said.

US government is one of the largest donors to WFP contributing to more than 45 billion kwacha to WFP since 2017 to support refugees, respond to emergencies and bring zero hunger in Malawi.
